First Needham Place Receives LEED Silver Certification
NEEDHAM, MASS.- October 15, 2013 - The Bulfinch Companies, Inc., a private commercial real estate investment firm, today announced that First Needham Place at 250 First Avenue in Needham, Massachusetts recently received the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance (LEED Silver Certification).
The 75,000 sf office building with tremendous Route 128 visibility is the headquarters location for Bulfinch. The property is currently 100% leased. Bulfinch acquired the property, the location of a former furniture retailer, in 1997 and redeveloped it into a new 3-story, first-class office building. Bulfinch’s development represented one of the first speculative developments on Route 128 during the 1990s. The property most recently received significant upgrades in order to maximize the efficiency of its operations culminating in the achievement of a LEED Silver Certification.
To receive a LEED-EB OM Silver Certification, projects must meet rigorous building USGBC standards by implementing sustainable practices that use less energy, water and natural resources; generate less waste; utilize environmentally preferred products; and deliver ongoing indoor environmental quality. Standards also include access to public transportation and amenities, as well as rigorous measurement and verification of energy use.
“The addition of First Needham Place to the Bulfinch portfolio of LEED Certified buildings further extends the company’s commitment to sustainability,” adds Eric Schlager, CEO of The Bulfinch Companies, Inc. “This reaffirms our objectives for environmental responsibility while delivering first-class sustainable space that today’s tenants demand.”
He added that a significant percentage of the Bulfinch portfolio is now either LEED certified or Energy Star rated and that the company is working toward additional sustainable building designations within its current portfolio. This is in line with Bulfinch’s goal of implementing innovative environmental practices at the majority of its properties in order to reduce its overall carbon footprint.
