Bulfinch and Newmark Secure MUJI Lease at 48 Brattle Street in Cambridge, MA

BOSTON, MA – December 5, 2025

An affiliate of The Bulfinch Companies, Inc. (Bulfinch), a commercial real estate, management and investment firm, is pleased to announce that MUJI, the globally renowned Japanese lifestyle brand, has signed a lease at 48 Brattle Street in the heart of Harvard Square.

Bulfinch represented building ownership in the lease transaction working closely with Nemark’s retail brokerage team led by Matt Curtin, Executive Managing Director, Greg Covey, Senior Managing Director and Alden Bush, Director. Bulfinch brings exceptional management expertise to the property and tenant base at 48 Brattle. Boston Realty Advisors’ retail leasing team led by Whitney Gallivan, Managing Director and Partner along with Joe Wagner, Managing Director, Gus Hoffman, Senior Associate and Luke Sweeney, Associate represented MUJI.

The new store, now open just in time for the holiday shopping season, spans approximately 14,000 square feet across multiple floors, marking an exciting expansion for MUJI in the Greater Boston area. MUJI will offer an array of homeware, apparel, accessories and more, and will introduce unique services and local experiences that elevate the customer’s visit.

MUJI’s Harvard Square location embraces the brand’s “frameless” design concept, with floor-to-ceiling glass windows that blur the line between the store and the street. This architectural approach echoes architect Ben Thompson’s 1969 vision of integrating merchandise, space, and urban life. The transparent façade highlights MUJI’s simple, thoughtful design ethos, offering passersby clear views of the inviting interior and each level of the store.

Located at 44–48 Brattle Street, the 88,000-square-foot building sits within the heart of Harvard Square, surrounded by world-renowned institutions, shopping, dining, culture, and history. The property offers exceptional branding and signage opportunities, with direct access to the Harvard Square MBTA Red Line Station, Cambridge bus routes, and connections to the Commuter Rail. It is also steps from One Brattle Square and a wide range of retail, restaurant, and banking amenities.

“We’re excited to bring a global brand like MUJI to the heart of Harvard Square,” said Michael Wilcox, Managing Director, Leasing at Bulfinch. “This location offers exceptional visibility and access in one of Greater Boston’s most dynamic and historic retail destinations. It’s an exciting addition that further enhances the energy and vibrancy of the Square.”

Harvard Square has long been a hub of culture, creativity and connection, and we are thrilled to bring MUJI into this community,” says Richard Rappaport, President of MUJI USA. “Our goal has always been to create spaces that feel welcoming and inclusive, where people can explore our thoughtfully designed products that enhance everyday life. This store is not just about retail, it’s about fostering a sense of connection, inspiration, and community right in the heart of Cambridge.”

Bulfinch has a proven track record of owning, managing, and attracting tenants to Harvard Square for over five decades. The firm’s expertise further strengthens the opportunity for prospective tenants and offers high-quality office and retail space. Currently, Bulfinch has prime office and retail space availability in Harvard Square – including 95 Mount Auburn Street and 125 Mount Auburn Street with configurations ranging from 1,000 to 35,500 SF of office and retail space.
