Bulfinch Wins Two Green Awards Affirming Commitment To Sustainability and Green Practices

NEEDHAM, MA – June 12, 2018

The Bulfinch Companies, Inc., a private commercial real estate investment firm, announced today that it has recently been recognized for two green awards; The 2018 Green Business of The Year Award from the Newton-Needham Regional Chamber as well as a 2018 Gold Award from the Massachusetts Excellence in Commuter Options (ECO) Awards.

A previous Green Business of The Year award-winner in 2015, Bulfinch has continued its commitment and dedication to sustainability and promoting green practices. Eric Schlager, CEO at Bulfinch, accepted the award at the Newton-Needham Regional Chamber’s spring breakfast on May 17th held at the Needham Sheraton.

“I am honored to accept this prestigious award for such an important and timely topic,” said Eric. “As a real estate investor and developer, Bulfinch is dedicated to building a more sustainable built environment by developing a portfolio of energy efficient and sustainable buildings that deliver social, economic, and environmental benefits for: the communities in which our buildings are located, our tenants and investors.”

Bulfinch was recognized for managing a combined total of 427,000 square feet of LEED certified commercial space, highlighted by several LEED Certified properties including a Platinum certification for commercial interior renovations to 1560 Trapelo Road in Waltham and a recent Gold Certification for the transformation of Life Time Center, formerly the Atrium Mall. A key initiative over the last year included the installation of solar array on the roof of Bulfinch’s 213,000 SF 117 Kendrick Street property in Needham, MA. The solar panels generate an impressive total of 1,000,000 kw of energy.

In addition, Bulfinch was also a recipient of a 2018 Gold Award from the Massachusetts Excellence in ECO Awards. Award winners were recognized at the eighth annual ECO Awards hosted by MassCommute, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), and MassRIDES.

An annual MA ECO award-winner since 2014, Bulfinch was recognized for its dedication to encouraging alternative transportation modes that are more efficient, economical and sustainable. Such modes include shuttle service to local MBTA stations, guaranteed ride home programs, bike-sharing programs, electric car charging stations, zipcars, quarterly tenant communications, and educational commuter events. Bulfinch also collaborates with the Route 128 Business Council enabling many of these sustainable solutions to be implemented throughout the Bulfinch portfolio, as well as excellent commuter transportation tools and resources for employees.

“We are honored to have received a Gold ECO Award this year and to have been recognized for our efforts in delivering sustainable commuting solutions to our employees and tenants,” said Jim Cronin, Director of Operations at Bulfinch.

Held at Fenway Park on April 18th, the MA ECO Awards program honored Massachusetts employers and their efforts to reduce congestion and greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging employees to utilize alternative transportation options. More than 150 Massachusetts business leaders came together to celebrate the exemplary contributions the award winners have made within the last year to help reduce traffic congestion, promote healthy lifestyles, and benefit the environment.
