Bulfinch’s Life Time Center Celebrates LEED Gold and Energy Star Certifications
NEEDHAM, MA — April 17, 2018 —The Bulfinch Companies, Inc., a private real estate investment, development and management firm, today announced that Life Time Center has achieved LEED Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Existing Buildings as well as Energy Star Certification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The LEED Gold and Energy Star Certifications support Bulfinch’s dedication to sustainable initiatives and are in line with the mission of the successful redevelopment of the former Atrium Mall into an innovative hub for medical and wellness users.
The state-of-the-art building successfully earned 65 LEED points exceeding the original target of LEED Silver Certification. Life Time Center features numerous sustainable design and energy efficient elements including large efficient floor plates, a sunlit atrium with a fully renovated five-level 1,000+ car parking garage. Other key sustainable features include indoor bicycle racks with dedicated shower facilities, car charging stations, preferred parking, recycling stations coupled with convenient access to public transit by way of a private Life Time Center shuttle to the MBTA Chestnut Hill green line. Adding to the sustainable transportation options, the property has a favorably high walk-score of 77, located just steps from over one million square feet of urban conveniences within three newly reinvented mixed-use developments.
Life Time Center’s Construction Manager, Bulfinch Construction Corp. spearheaded the development team, which included Stantec Architects, AHA Consulting Engineers, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger and John Moriarty & Associates.

A significant percentage of the Bulfinch portfolio is now either LEED Certified or Energy Star rated and the company is actively working toward additional sustainable building designations within its portfolio. This is in line with Bulfinch’s goal of implementing innovative environmental practices for the majority of its properties in order to reduce its overall carbon footprint. Bulfinch was recently recognized as the 2018 Green Business of The Year Award from the Newton-Needham Regional Chamber and won a Gold Award for the Massachusetts Excellence in Commuter Options (ECO) Awards.
